Privacy Policy

Scene Skipper ("the app," "we," "us") helps parents skip chosen scenes
while their family watches movies on a Roku, and lets parents build and
share scene-skip lists. This policy explains what we collect, why, where
it lives, and how to have it deleted. We aim to collect as little as
possible.
What we collect
We only collect what the app actually stores. Specifically:
Account information
When you create an account, we store:
- Username — chosen by you; shown as the author of any lists you publish.
- Email address — used to sign in, to send password-reset codes,
and to contact you about your account. We never sell it or use it for marketing.
- Password — stored only as a bcrypt hash.
We never store or can see your actual password.
- Parental PIN, if you set one — stored only as a hash, so a
reinstalled app can check it.
- An app-install identifier — a random ID created by the app
and sent when you register, used to help prevent misuse.
- Account creation date.
Content you create
- Scene-skip lists you publish to the community — the movie/show
title, the streaming service, your version notes, and the individual scenes
(start time, end time, and any comment you add). Published lists are shown
with your username and are visible to other users. A per-list download count
is kept.
- Timestamp requests — if you ask the community to build a list,
we store the title, service, and any note you include, linked to your account.
- Cloud backup of your lists — the lists you keep in the app are
backed up to your account so they appear on each phone or tablet you sign in on.
When a backup is replaced, we keep earlier copies so lost lists can be recovered.
Notifications
- Push notification tokens for each phone or tablet signed in to
your account, with the device type (e.g. iOS) and a device name (such as
"iPhone" or the name you've given the device). We use these to alert every
device on your account — for example, "Protection paused" if a phone loses
the Roku. Signing out removes that device's token.
While a movie is protected
To keep skipping while your phone is locked, the app sends our server the
details of the current session: the movie's title and streaming service,
the skip list's scene times, playback position, the Roku's address on your
home network, and a notification token. Our server uses this only to wake
your phone at the right moments to skip a scene. These session records
are linked to your account. We delete these session records
automatically 7 days after the session starts.
We also keep diagnostic records of protection sessions (timing and skip
results — for example, when a notification was sent and where a skip
landed) so we can help if a scene didn't skip. They're linked to your
account and deleted automatically after 30 days.
If you send diagnostics
Only when you tap "Send diagnostics" in Settings, the app sends us a log of
its recent activity (protection start/stop, skip results, connection
problems) plus your app version, phone model and OS version, notification
permission, and your Roku's model and software version (not its serial
number). We use it only to troubleshoot, and delete it after 30 days.
Your Roku and your home network
- The app uses your local network to find your Roku and send it
playback commands (such as jumping forward). This traffic stays on your home
Wi-Fi.
- The app reads your Roku's serial number, name, and model and saves
them with your connection on your phone or tablet. We also store the Roku's
serial number with your account on our server, so your account
stays connected to one Roku at a time and every phone on the account uses the
same one. Choosing "Forget" in the app removes it from our server. The Roku's
name and model stay on your device.
Subscription information
- Subscription status (an expiry date) as reported to us by
RevenueCat, our subscription processor, from Apple or Google.
Payments are handled entirely by the App Store or Google Play; we never see
your card details.
Launch waitlist (website)
If you sign up on our website to hear when Scene Skipper launches, we store your email
address, which form you used, and when. We use it only to send you the launch
announcement. We don't share it, and you can ask us to delete it at any time by
emailing [email protected].
What we do NOT collect
- We do not show ads or use third-party advertising or analytics trackers.
- We do not sell personal information.
- We do not collect anything from the Roku beyond what's listed above,
and we don't watch what you watch outside of sessions you start in Scene Skipper.
How we use it
- To let you sign in and use your account on your family's devices.
- To skip scenes on your Roku, including while your phone is locked.
- To send you notifications about protection.
- To publish, display, and let others import the lists you choose to publish.
- To back up and restore your lists.
- To check your subscription status.
- To secure the service (e.g. rate limiting and preventing misuse).
Where it lives
Account data, published lists, requests, backups, notification tokens, and
session records are stored in a PostgreSQL database hosted on
Railway, in the United States.
Sharing
We do not share your personal information with third parties except:
- Content you choose to publish is, by design, visible to other Scene
Skipper users (shown with your username).
- Service providers who run parts of the service for us: hosting
(Railway), email delivery for password resets, push notification delivery
(Expo, Apple, and Google), and subscriptions (RevenueCat, the Apple App Store,
and Google Play) — only as needed to run the service.
- When required by law.
Data retention and deletion
We keep your data while your account is active. You can delete your account
from Settings in the app, or request deletion at any time.
When you delete your account we remove your account record, your cloud backups,
your notification tokens, your session records, and any diagnostic records, and disassociate any lists
you published (or remove them on request). Some published community content may
be kept without any link to your account so that lists other users have
imported keep working. Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription —
cancel that in the App Store or Google Play.
Children's privacy
Scene Skipper is a tool for parents. Accounts are intended for adults.
We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a
child has created an account, contact us at the address above and we will delete it.
Your rights (GDPR / CCPA basics)
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, or delete
your personal data, and to request a copy of it. To exercise any of these, email
the address above. We do not sell personal information.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app changes. Material changes will be reflected
by an updated date at the top and, where appropriate, an in-app notice.
